Hello, I have been struggling with my hair for about 4 months now. Back in May I had decided to go back to my natural hair color from being platinum blonde. My natural is an ashy dark dirty blonde. Unfortunately doing it at home was my first mistake, and I ended up with red hair. I went to my old high school which has a salon with students working in it, which was my second mistake. They got my hair to a more manageable color but cut off around 3-4 inches when I only wanted 1 inch off. I was devastated.. and my hair was very very dry and thin and lifeless everywhere except about 5 inches on the top of my head. Since then I have added a lot more blonde highlights to get closer to my natural color as it wasn’t going a weird orange red color from the previous red dye. It has gotten a lot more moisturized and feels much less dry since then, but regardless is still very stringy and lifeless looking and very hard to style and maintain volume. The natural state of my hair has never been very volumous , but when I had bleached it the texture changed and it felt a lot thicker. I desperately want that hair back but cannot bleach my hair in this state.. so the only thing I can really do is grow it all out again till I have my natural 100% hair back to bleach it again , with caution to have minimal damage. I have been taking hairbrush vitamins, a b-complex vitamin, as well as trying to drink more water and eat more of the right foods. I’ve also recently started doing a castor oil and coconut oil leave in treatment, which has made it feel stronger. Do you have any advice for me? I am just so desperate to feel some weight to my hair.. it feels like air when I move my head back and forth and doesn’t even feel like it’s there. I also have parts on the top of my head on the right side that got burned off from bleaching back in January this year, they have grown about 6 inches out now but look very odd and stick out unless I straighten them with light heat. I don’t straighten any other parts of my hair anymore as I used to every day and that definitely contributed to the damage I face now. Hi Maddie, sorry to hear about your split end woes. I can sympathise because my hair can be very weak and often starts splitting after just one use of the hair straighteners! I would suggest getting a proper trim at your hairdressers to get rid of as many dead ends as possible. Then you can start afresh with your new haircare routine. Follow the tips in the article – eat plenty of protein rich foods, use luke warm water, try the inversion method, use a good oil maybe once a week. This should all help improve the condition of your hair if nothing else.
I know this is not really part of the article, but if my hair has lots of split ends that reaches to my scalp, do I have no choice but to chop it off? My hair is at shoulder length and it has been like that for 2 years and it’s the same length. My hair is not that fried but it’s pretty damaged. I did the unthinkable and I chopped off the side hairs underneath to let them grow healthy and fresh again. It kinda looks stupid now but will this help me of getting the short hairs long again? Any tips?

So… it might be a little too early to share my thoughts, because it’s been only a few days I read this things above, but somewhere in my unconsciousness I never really wanted to believe these tips work, because for example on youtube – where I spend half my life – there are so many videos about this, and they are so clickbait, and the uploaders basically advertise a lot of products as well if you know what I mean.. But your tutorial seemed legit to me, and I’ve read it from the first word to the last. So what I did was to buy… let me get them… uhm so here we go: HARKONTROLL BOOST that says it contains keratin, zink, koppar, (copper ???), niacin, pantotensyra, vitamin B6, and BIOTIN, I also bought B Active tablettes, that mentions TONS of vitamins on the container, and I bought some walnuts, pecans, and peanuts as well. Then the inversion method… I already did 4 days, so there is 3 more left, and in the first 2 days I did not actually hang my head down, I was just lying on the bed, and I don’t use coconut oil, I just applied some Garnier hair conditioner before the 5 minute massage… but I think the change is already visible. Also my hair is very short now, and during the last week I pushed it back with a beanie, but today when I got out of the shower I pulled my “bangs” down on my forehead, and I think it wasn’t that long a week ago. Keep in mind I have 3 days left of the inversion method, but since I decided to grow my hair long again, I will repeat the process in January. If I do so, I will share if I got good results

Hi Jennifer, thanks for your comment. I know how you feel, your confidence does take such a beating when your hair is not how you would like it to be and it can be very frustrating. It sounds like you’re taking all the right steps to getting your hair back to good health. Eating a protein rich diet with plenty of vegetables and doing a moisturising treatment every week will certainly help, but it might be best to stay away from heat tools at the moment – perhaps you could clip your hair back or use a head tie or hairband to keep those rogue hairs in place for the time being. Perhaps you could see a hair stylist and get some advice on how to naturally style your hair at the moment, without the need for hot tools, while you grow it out? I have found this incredibly useful in the past – they will go through a few different hairstyles with you that will be easy to achieve at home. Have you tried the inversion method or at least gently massaging your scalp? I’m a big fan of this, as I find it increases hair growth but is also really good for your scalp. How often are you washing your hair? It will take time to bring your hair back to good health so continue what you are doing, and I hope you will see some improvement in the next few months. Anushka
Hi Whitney. I’m so sorry you’re having problems with your hair – we can all relate! You say it breaks off, in which case you might actually NEED a haircut. This will keep it healthy and prevent it from splitting. With regards to other solutions, have you tried any hair treatments? LUSH have some great ones, and there are also hundreds online you can make at home? It sounds to me like your hair is not necessarily struggling to grow, but is unhealthy and therefore you are losing length and fullness. I hope these tips help 🙂
