My hair became thicker, shinier and grew faster when I went on a High Fat Low Carb Ketogenic diet with low starch, and no sugar. (Keyword “Dr. Eric Westman HFLC” on youtube to learn details.) I went on this diet to lose weight, and I lost 44 lbs. but at the same time, something changed regarding the suddenly much faster, thicker hair growth. It was a noticeable but welcome side effect. If you think about it, it makes sense. Hair is made of keratin which is protein and it becomes shiny and well moisturized because of nutritional fats and oils in the diet. Eating a bunch of sugar, and starchy carbs is not helpful to thick, shiny hair. Overconsumption of carbs leads to diabetes which causes hair loss. If you want your hair to grow, you need protein, oils and fats. Hair is damaged by heat from blow drying and hot irons and the natural oils are stripped out by soaps, surfactants and detergents. I also suggest brushing very very gently, starting at the tips and working back upwards to the scalp with a wide tooth hair pick, and do not brush 100 strokes at bed time or anything like that. I also suggest staying away from chemicals, perms, relaxers and weaves. Do not use cheap rubber bands, do not rip chop pull or tug, do not let the beautician “thin” your hair with shears, nor chop and cut. Instead, just give the beauty shop a rest while you focus on your nutritional status at home. If you see a woman with thinning hair, and you talk to her you will soon learn that they are typically type II diabetic and or “insulin resistant.” Men are a different tale because they may simply have male pattern baldness, but in woman there is one main cause for hair loss: diabetes. Many of these hair loss woman are typically overweight yet malnourished, with a non dewey, haggard and worn looking complexion. If you carefully observe such an overweight woman with thinning hair, you will see them eating candy, drinking soft drinks, eating potatoes, french fries, pasta, rice, breads, parties, chips, so on and so forth. The overwhelming carbohydrate load leads to all her problems: her obesity, her diabetes, her malnutrition, and her hair loss. Supplements I recommend for hair growth include Biotin, MCT oil, Multi B Complex vitamins and Omega 3 and D-3. I also don’t think washing the hair a whole lot is a great plan because strip the oils, and dries it out. Washing daily won’t really help the hair to grow, but if you must wash it, just sparingly soap the crown, and do it every second or third day. Personally, I like the “Agadir Argan Oil Shampoo, Conditioner and most of all the Spray Treatment to add shine and hydrate. Some people recommend coconut oil, but natural coconut oil becomes a solid mass at 74 degrees Fahrenheit. If you buy coconut oil, get fractionated coconut oil, so it will pour from the bottle as a liquid. I sometimes do use that, but I prefer Argan oil from Morocco, which I purchase cheaply in bulk. The least expensive is “Dr Adorable” purchased online from Amazon. All the supplements and vitamins I buy for myself are for sale on Amazon.com because I don’t have a car, so I have it all delivered in a box, to my door, with two day shipping. Hi Katie. Firstly, now you’ve got some length back, it’s imperative that you keep your hair in good condition. This means, regular cuts, and nourishing hair treatments (coconut oil, natural masks etc). I’d also recommend brushing your hair regularly, as this stimulates hair follicles, and, furthering this, the inversion method. Good luck in your quest. 🙂

If you use the inversion method and massage every other day with coconut oil without breaking for four weeks in between treatments until your hair is your desired length will it stop working after awhile or damage your hair? Hi there…sorry to hear that! I like to alternate with the oils. I wash my hair every other day, so when I’m not washing my hair I do the inversion method without any oil and then when I am washing my hair the next morning I will use coconut oil when massaging and leave it overnight. You can adapt the method to suit your needs, for example if you only wash your hair once a week then you can use coconut oil just once, but still do the inversion the rest of the days without oil. I hope that makes sense!

Do not use a towel and wring your hair out when you finish washing as this can cause your hair to break. In case you want the hair to grow thick, try to take care of your hair by gently making it dry with a soft towel and then allowing it to air-dry. This natural way is easy and gives great results.
Hi Ammaarah, The best thing about hair, is that it almost always grows back, so don’t fret! You have said your hair is dry, so first and foremost I would recommend a coconut oil treatment to renourish it and get it looking and feeling healthy again. I already take biotin every day and it sure does help make my hair thicker and healthier – I will double up for the next week to see if that helps with hair growth. I’ve been taking it for a year and a half when I started growing my hair out from a pixie cut – it’s also great for growing and strengthening your fingernails. I started growing out my hair 18 months ago and now it is to my shoulders which is roughly .75 of an inch per month. I’ve had a few trims to shape it up – my hair was almost shaved above my ears so it was like starting my hair growth from scratch. I also drink a lot of water and eat plenty of almonds & avocados because I like their health benefits and I eat plenty of other fruits and veggies. A good diet is key to hair growth. I changed my diet from lots of pasta, rice and sugar and the difference in how I feel is amazing. So is my hair since I changed my diet. It was very difficult to break old habits and to stay away from most sugars and sweets, but it was well worth it for my hair growth and for how good I feel. For my main meal each day, I eat a huge bowl of raw veggie salad like cucumbers (my fave), carrots, celery, peppers, lettuce (optional), olives, sunflower seeds, nuts or anything else that suits my fancy at the time, covered in a salad dressing that I make from vinegar and olive oil with spices or sometimes I eat them naked sans dressing. 🙂 I also eat a small portion of meat, beans or eggs for protein and usually a slice of good bread, but the veggie salad is the biggest part of my meal. Delish! Not only has this been very beneficial for my hair, I’ve trimmed my down waistline without really trying. I have seen a big difference in my hair since changing my diet. It’s thicker, shinier and healthier than ever! I also use coconut, olive oil or argan oil in my hair from time to time and I will add the scalp massage with oil to see if this will also work – I’m excited to see if I can grow my hair an inch or more in a week!

Hi there, thanks for your message. With the inversion method you can sit on a chair and just tip your head forward and over so your hair falls forward – you can then start massaging your head. If you feel lightheaded or dizzy then stop immediately. You can eat plenty of food that’s good for hair growth such as spinach and nuts. To get your hair back to good health I can recommend using coconut oil on your scalp and through the lengths of your hair – you only need a small amount to really inject some moisture into your hair.
